Dr. Joel McCorkel holds degrees in Optical Engineering (BS, 2005) and Optical Sciences (PhD, 2009) from the University of Arizona. He is a physical research scientist with the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center where his current work involves development of the next-generation environmental monitoring and Earth observing sensors. He serves as the Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) Project Scientist, the principal investigator of the Goddard Laser for Absolute Measurement of Radiance (GLAMR) calibration facility, and the principle investigator of the Goddard Calibration Laboratory.

BA in Physics from Wellesley College. Ph.D. in Applied Physics from New Jersey Institute of Technology/Rutgers University-Newark studying the nonlinear optical properties of novel nanostructured ion-implanted and laser-ablated silicon using femtosecond pulse excitation.
Serves as a laser technical expert for the Radiometric Calibration Lab (RCL). Constructed tunable parametric oscillators for the ALTAR wavelength and radiance calibration range. She is responsible for the operation of commercial Tisapphire, OPO, and EKSPLA lasers.
